Bald Face Hornet

This is the bad boy that stung me. Errr... bad girl? It would have been a female.

We found their nest in the dogwood I was STANDING UNDER WHILE CHOPPING LIMBS OFF. It looked kind of like this:

Are YOU grossed out, too?

Actually, it turns out that these little guys are really good for our planet. They eat a ton of insects, including some that destroy yards. If you ever run across a nest, leave it if possible. They're good for insect population control. However, they're aggressive little buggers and will attack (I can attest for this) if their home is provoked - or for no reason at all.
