The Surface of the Sun

When I was preparing to move to Las Vegas from Washington State, I kept telling people I was moving to the surface of the sun. It’s hot here. Everyone knows it. I mean, we’re in a desert. A desert filled with CONCRETE, which means it never has a chance of cooling down at night. Mid-summer, when it’s over 110 for a week in a row, the “cool” for the night is 95.

That’s hot.

But it’s part of living in Vegas. And it’s not really THAT BAD. (Don't laugh at me!) Yes, it’s hot. But once you’ve lived through several days at 115 degrees, 104 starts to feel good!

That is… it feels good in June.
And July.
And even August.

But September…

September starts teasing you. The weather reports say things like, "This is our last day of three-digit temperatures!" 4 days later, it's 101. Then the humidity starts to climb. We like 2% humidity here, and it may be 49% on any given day!

People start getting crabby. We stare at the sky and wonder why it's so hot. We yell at meteorologists.

And we start commiserating together.

That's the funny part of it. We've all suffered through the insufferable together, and now we have this bond that brings us all together. It doesn't matter your age, background, beliefs--We are ONE and we shall RAGE against the sun!

OK, it's not that dramatic.
But we are united.

This never-ending heat starts conversations, it pulls people together in air-conditioned stores, it makes us laugh when someone stumbles into somewhere cool because we were just that person 4 minutes ago.

And once that conversation about the life-sucking heat ensues, we start talking about other things... new stores to visit, friends we have in common, upcoming festivals.

This terrible, horrible, no-good heat brings us into community like nothing else can. We're forced together, and we connect.

Maybe we DO live on the surface of the sun. That's OK. Turns out there's life here after all.

Snow Day!!!

  • Outside of my window…. is snow. And ice. And frozenness. BRRRRRR....
  • I am thankful for… Christmas movies. I've been watching a LOT of the Hallmark channel. A LOT.
  • I am thinking about… the fact that my eyeballs hurt and I'm really tired.
  • I am praying for…my future. My husband, my children... those orphans who don't/won't have a mommy until God lets me into their lives.
  • My projects for the weekend…Christmas and Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving part is obvious, but I'm starting to decorate for Christmas right now. I just cleaned some parts of my carpet today, so I've got furniture in the middle of the room. When the carpet dries (i.e. tomorrow), I'll have everything rearranged so I can get my Christmas tree next week.
  • I am nervous about... The busyness of this next month. Between commitments at church, work, etc., I have to truly focus on God - and the reason WHY I am so busy--how much I love my Jesus and celebrating his birth!!

This and That

I stole this from another blog--Michelle is a Compassion Advocate and I love reading her stories about her kids, etc. She posts this from time to time... and I sometimes have a hard time coming up with fun topics... so this is what *I* am going to modify for myself!!! :)
  • Outside of my window…. it finally looks like November. :) It's gray, drizzly, cool... It's funny, though... with the warm days + the rain, some of my plants have started blooming again! I've got a bright yellow Gerbera Daisy on my porch--my favorite flower... thanks, God!
  • I am hearing… the Dick Van Dyke Show. I just turned an episode on to watch while I ate some lunch. :) All weekend, though, it's been Pandora with Christmas music!
  • I am smelling… my fuzzy, snuggly Lockwood.
  • I am wearing… my 2007 RID long sleeved shirt. It's warm and comfy.
  • My plans for the day…I already went to church... I help sometimes with the sound for Children's Church. It was fun, and the kids were super cute. I MAY have friends swinging by later, but not sure. That means I should probably vacuum downstairs! :)
  • I am thankful for… my long weekend. I've been off work since Wednesday (it's Sunday now) and have done SO Much in my house. It's been a long time since I've been this productive.
  • I am thinking about… how glad I am that I've gotten connected with Faith Assembly of Lacey. I just love the people there, and God is truly growing me there.
  • I am creating… at the moment... nothing. I haven't picked up my cross-stitch for a LONG time. I may have to do that soon.
  • I am praying for… My Ezra in Indonesia. She's my sponsored child through Compassion, and I've been writing her more and more lately... I feel like I'm actually developing a relationship with her--and it's about time. If you sponsor a child, I would really like to encourage you to WRITE to him or her... it's as important as the monthly money.
  • My projects for the week… Well, my major project this weekend was getting my house clean - and, except for the office, I accomplished it. It feels SO good.

FALL

Definitely fall here... I went west today, toward the ocean... THICK THICK fog on the way there... it started to burn off mid-morning and the brightest cold blue sky appeared. definitely fall.

Been fighting a cold for a few days... I know I'm on the up end of it, but still am drippy and stuffy and TIRED. I've got to get over this thing SOON - so does my dad, he has it, too. Someone at work told me I gave it to her, but I don't think that's possible unless we got it together last week. I don't think I'm still contagious. I heard on the radio that pomegranate juice is supposed to be a good cold blocker. Maybe I'll try some one of these days.

With everything that's going on, I'm not so energized for too much extra these days. Working has been tiring, and getting sick wasn't too helpful, lol.

Reading through Acts right now. Acts is good... it's pretty amazing. Also reading a book that was really good (and still is), but is getting into some serious cancer issues... hitting a little too close to home right now.

Blog for Serry

Check out Serry's blog on the right... I'll have updates there on what's going on in her (and therefore OUR) life.

Thanks all.

Fall is here... rainy rainy rainy. It's nice, though... I like the rain.

MO for prayer

I found something on Outlook 2007 I HATE yesterday... I schedule interpreters for our office and that means that I use Outlook to track everything. I have my own scheduling calendar, but I put the info in all of our Deaf staff's calendars, including changing the category to an Interpreter(s) Scheduled category. All is fine and good until I come to a series - you now can't change the category of an individual appointment in a series... it's all or nothing, baby. Any tech geeks out there know the way around this? (And no, I can't break up the series'--they aren't my appointments!) I just want them to be YELLOW!

All for now...

144 60 4

Jenni just shook her finger at me that I haven't posted in awhile. :) I guess I haven't because I have a bunch of stuff going on... but not sure I can blog about it all, you know? Like... some things that are really important to me, but I'm not sure cyberspace is ready for them yet.

SO... that being said, I'll tell you three other important things.

1 - I would recommend reading Scripture today. Here... in case you don't know what to read, I'll be reading this one tonight: Psalm 144. Hey - I'm almost done with the Psalms! Ooooh, where to go next. Maybe a major prophet? We'll see.

2 - It's 60 degrees and raining. Today proved that I truly AM a Washingtonian. It's been gray for a couple days... threatening rain, but not doing it. Right now is a nice, gray, cool summer rain. I LOVE IT. and my PLANTS love it, too. (I kinda suck at watering them.)

3 - JURY DUTY. I'm really glad I remembered to add it to my list... because I have jury duty this week. I just called - day 3 of not being called. I really don't want to go in on Thursday, and I really, REALLY don't want to go in on Friday--I have meetings those days that I don't want to miss! :) (Besides the simple fact that Friday is my day off!! :))

So I have a bunch of pictures I could post, but won't do that yet. I'd like to see Serry's first - we both took probably 230-300 each of the camping trip - I love digital cameras.

today was our first chilly day in... well, in a long time. Wait - it wasn't chilly. It was probably something like 70. But compared to the past while... it's cool. and right now it's 58--cooler than *I* have seen it at almost 9:00 in a long time.

I'm reading Anna Karenina... still. ;) It's really good, just really slow. I'm in the second half now--I'm just happy that Levin stopped farming. Farming got boring. I hope that he doesn't farm any more. You should read it... just make sure you give it time and keep going... the names get confusing and VERY Russian at first, but I think it's worth it. The sad thing is, I know what happens... but because of that--I need to finish the book.

What the heck?

At 6:00 it was 92 degrees or something. 2 hours later it's inthe 70's... and looking stormy... odd...

The Snow This Morning

My back deck - look at the size of those flakes... Good thing I haven't started buying and planting flowers yet. BTW - that wooden birdhouse planter thing is the planter that I need to paint that's on my 30 List.

The road heading toward my house.
From my front porch. If you look closely, you can see the buds on the bare tree nearest me. Also, those trees on the other side of the street are in FULL BLOOM. They're a gorgeous pink right now.

Aaaand...

TODAY it's SNOWING.

WHA?

PackRat

Yes, I'm a PackRaddict. If you don't know what PackRat is, just let John and I and some of the others who play randomly invite you to gain more credits. ;)

So, I thought I'd post something a little more interesting for you than a list. ;)

I'm going to be leading a small group soon. I love my small group right now - it's been a fantastic opportunity to meet people and grow in Philippians. :) It's just time to start my OWN group. Now I just have to pick a book to go through... I had thought something from the Old Testament would be interesting... or maybe Hebrews? That would be cool... Just waiting to see.

Just did site reviews in Vancouver. That was interesting.

Oh, it's been snowing. In Western Washington. In Spring. HOW RANDOM.

OK, I guess I don't have a lot to write about. ta ta!

Wow

What is the most amazing thing in the world for me to wake up to this morning???

Sunlight streaming through my window, blue sky, everything cleansed by last nights rain.

I'm not sure God could have shouted His joyful Good Morning any louder. It's gonna be a good day. :)

Picture of the Day

This was taken on the way to work last week - it was around Tuesday (before all the nastiness of weather happened). Isn't this gorgeous?!?!

Thursday, January 17, 2008

OK, so heres some happy things I LOVE the fact that its not pitch black when I leave the house in the morning any more. I LOVE that its not pitch black when I leave work in the evenings. I LOVE that although it was snowing in some areas this morning, the SUN is out and shining happily. I LOVE THE SUN.

I'm Dreaming of a...

...WHITE CHRISTMAS!

It's ACTUALLY SNOWING. Like REAL, STICKING snow. This is fascinating! I don't think I've ever in my LIFE had a White Christmas!

Good evening

Not sure who all watches the news about WA, but this flooding is INSANE. We've had a few people die as a result of flooding (or trees falling on them). It's pretty sad. 20 miles of I-5 are closed still - I heard the water was TEN feet over the roadway. Insanity.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY COSMO AND LOCKWOOD!

Tonight is their birthday party! (i.e. me and my mom and step-dad, lol)

I'll try to post pictures. :)

ONE YEAR OLD!
