The Difficulty of Blogging

One of my goals this year was to blog at least once a week. I wanted to WRITE because I want to WRITE (amazing how that works, eh?) and I did an amazing job at it... for about 2 months. Then things slowly petered out.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who has set a goal and watched it crash and burn. In honor of all of our flaming goals, I'm going to say that my goal REALLY was to blog 52 times this year, minimum. That counts, right?!

In honor of that, and because sometimes I have great lessons from life to share, and others I just... don't... I am going to create a great list of "things to blog about if you don't know what to blog about."

To be fair... I'm stealing some of these from the internet.  There were a ton more here that I didn't steal!

  • My Favorite Things - favorite treats and places in DTLV.
  • Short Story
  • A recent speech
  • Link to a TED talk, then share a takeaway
  • Interviews
  • List of 100 things to do when you're bored
  • Bucket List
  • Things you'll never do again
  • Instead of just listing gifts, pick 3 gifts and talk about them. "Eucharisteo always precedes the miracle!"
  • Other questions to ask instead of "How are you?"
  • Review a book or movie
  • Pet Peeves
  • Talk about learning styles or personality styles and how they interact with others
  • Share a friend's blog
  • Join a link party and blog about that topic (if there is one)
There we go! I now have an official list of things that sound fun to me. What else do YOU write about?

What are your goals?

I hate resolutions.  Seriously.  Resolutions are so often ridiculous and rarely, if ever, kept.

However… I need some kind of pressure to be motivated to DO anything, so I like goals.  Tasks.  Things that need to be accomplished WITH a due date.  And a new year is a really good time to set year-long goals.

Unfortunately, that just happens to coincide with New Year’s Resolutions.  Phoey.

Let’s review some of what makes a good goal.

It’s specific.  It’s not, “Exercise more.”  It’s, “Be able to run a mile without stopping.”
It’s achievable.  It’s not, “Read 500 400+ page books.”  It’s, “Read at least 2 books a month.”
It’s challenging.  It’s not, “Speak in Toastmasters when I can.”  It’s, “Compete in a Toastmaster’s speech competition.”

I’m trying to evaluate my life and find goals that touch multiple areas.  I probably have more goals established than I should, but mine have become very specific--that Toastmaster’s competition one is real, folks.  I also still have a couple vague ideas that sound a lot like resolutions that I’m trying to figure out how to make into a goal.  I like that process, though.  It means that I get to spend time with the goal before I commit to it.  See if it is something I want to have happen this year.  If it fits my vision for the upcoming year, maybe if it fits where the church is going for the year, and what is happening in my life.  There are a lot of very good goals out there that I have not adopted, simply because they’re not a fit right now.

So what are your goals for 2015?  This isn’t my entire list, but here are a few of mine:
  • Read at least 12 books this year, 6 novels, 6 ministry-specific (I get distracted very easily lately, so I need to remember that I LOVE reading)
  • Compete in a Toastmaster’s speech competition
  • Blog at least once a week for one year (started this month!)

Share your list!

Silence

Silence is a funny concept.  Really, it just means that things are quiet.  But in our life, it can represent so much more.

For example, I've had the TV on all morning while I was cleaning up, working around the house, doing my budget.  There's an Andy Griffeth marathon on this weekend, and it's great background TV.  I just turned it off, though, to come here, and in the silence I hear the sounds of home and summer.  The refrigerator, the cats' water fountain, cicadas outside (that's a new one for me, the Washington girl).

I've been silent on my blog for a few months, too.  My last post was from February.  There's a reason I haven't posted since then:  March.  In a very short period I injured my knee, got bronchitis (for weeks!), had my identity stolen, 2 family members very close to me had heart attacks, one of those soon after broke his kneecap, my apartment was broken into and items stolen, and more.

It was overwhelming.
It was exhausting.
I was living in a mixture of fear and faith and confusion.

And while I was silent here, I couldn't be silent in real life.

The moment silence settled, fear or anxiety overwhelmed me.  In a group of friends, at work, at home alone.  My heart would race, tears would fall, I would envision the night I came home to my door busted open.

The problem is that a lot of prayer involves silence.  When you can't pause, when you can't take a quiet breath, it's almost impossible to hear from God.  When you have to drown out YOUR voice with music or TV or talking, you also drown out the only One who can truly give you comfort.

During this time I found a new tool to add to my arsenal.  It's called Praying in Color, and it allows me to draw, write, and color my prayers.  The first time I did it, I wrote out a verse that had impacted me and doodled around it... as I was doodling, I chose colors and shapes that represented what I wanted to pray.  I thought through the words that God had been trying to speak with me.  An hour later--a SILENT hour later, I ended up, not with a masterpiece, but with evidence that though I was still struggling, God was continuing to love me.

There are people in my life right now who are experiencing things far worse than my horrible month.  Things I wish I could take away, but I can't.  Even so, what I felt was real.  What you are feeling, whatever you're experiencing, is real.

For me it was the silence that felt like it was strangling.  But God showed me a way out of the suffocating, anxiety-causing, fear that wrapped around me in the silence.  He will for you, too.

If you're stuck in fear, stuck and feeling like you're sinking, take a deep breath.  It might happen right away, it might take a long time.

But He is yearning for you.
He is seeking you.
You need to reach.
Breathe.

He has a way out, even if it's hard.  Maybe it's something as simple as praying in color.  Maybe it's filling your silence with quiet music until you can be in peace.   Just keep trying.

Eucharisteo

So, I just finished reading 1,000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp last week.

Oh. My. Word.

I so VERY highly recommend this book.  Through the first chapter, I was thinking... "Well, this is good, yes... but as phenomenal as people are saying?  I don't know."  I kept going.  One day (I believe it was by chapter 2), it slammed into me - what she was writing about was right out of and in to the pages of my heart.

I started my own list of gifts, of grace, of little things (and big things) that I'm so thankful that God provides to me.  Scroll up to the top and look for my "1,000 Gifts" tab.  Some of you may find yourselves hidden in there.

If you start reading--specifically, if you start a list, come back and tell me about it!

The Craziness of Adding Friends...

OK, so I've figured out that the more time I spend in the blogosphere, the more people I "meet," and blogs I want to read up on. I've added a few more blogs to my "People to Meet" over on the left... you should check some of them out. Some of those people I actually know, some have things in common (like adoption or Compassion), some are just of people trying to live their life and their faith as honestly as possible.

I don't really know how many followers I have any more, since so many of us/you have migrated almost wholly to facebook, but... Drop by and say hi sometimes so I don't feel lonely. :) And check out my new "friends." You might like them, too.

One Life Impacts How Many?

It's late and I'm laying in bed reading blogs on my laptop. I know I should go to sleep, but I always seem to push it to the limit on the weekends... weekdays, too, I guess. A few weeks ago a friend asked me, "You love sleep so much... why do you always try to put it off???" I guess I'll never know the answer to that one. :)

In my last post, you read about the book Outlive Your Life and how it and my small groups are affecting me. I'm here to say... it's still going on. This week's video during Tuesday's small group was so powerful--I was almost in tears watching the lives of 2 ordinary Americans change when their world was flipped in Haiti... when the earthquake hit just one week after they moved there to become English teachers. They found their ministry HOME, where they knew they belonged.

My heart has been yearning even more to make a difference in the world. I have always, ALWAYS wanted to leave a legacy, something that I was a part of that is so much bigger than me. God's showing small ways to do that now--and how to prepare for more ways to make an impact in the future. Our small group is planning on tackling an issue in our community, and I'm excited to see this group of women grow into that. I've been completely convicted in my lack of relationship building (i.e. letter writing) for my child I sponsor through Compassion. That conviction has led to me joining a group of other sponsors who write their children every second Friday (that's today, by the way!). My Ezra has a letter in the mail to her right now, and one sitting on my night stand with a bunch of pictures in it--just waiting for one finishing touch and a stamp. By sponsoring her, I AM fighting poverty, hunger, need... she's getting an education, learning about Jesus, and developing a friend--ME. I'm so blessed to call her MY friend... and over the last several months we've actually started to get to know each other better. If I ever go to Indonesia--she's the first person I want to see.

OK, it's nearing midnight. I'm going to go to sleep. But here's tonight's question... well, questionS. Have you written to YOUR sponsored child today?? If you don't have one, are you willing to make a long term difference in someone's life?

Cat Story and a Winner

...how's that for a blog title. ;)

The Winner first... Mandy won last night's question! My new favorite TV show is the Dick Van Dyke show - SOOO funny! :) As a prize, she is featured in today's blog! If you click on her name, you can see HER blog... Mandy and I met in college - she was my very first roommate, back in the 96-97 school year at Central. She's married and has a cute 4 year old who loves to laugh - at least to laugh at me. Mandy's daughter makes me think I'm the funniest person in the world (finally someone who agrees with me!!). Mandy's actually one of the people who first got me to go to Salt (a campus ministry at Central) where I committed my life to Jesus. I think I still have an email from her from 1996 (yes, we had email way back then - barely... it was my first email address, I think!) that said that Bruce was passed out in the hall... (4 years later, Bruce became student body president. Hmmm...) Anyway, Mandy's a kool kat that I'm really grateful to have as a friend, and I'm thankful that she's moved back so she can be close to ME! (no, that's not why they moved back. ;) LOL)

And now for the cat story. Well, I'm not really sure which one to tell. I'll just let you know... my two boys, Cosmo and Lockwood, are quite characters. Tonight I accidentally left my closet door open (a no no with two curious kitties around) and Cosmo wandered in to get lost among the clothes, shoes, and bags. Lucky snuck in after him, but leapt out when I hollered his name. I got up to go shut the door and started looking for my Cosmo... the only thing I could see was a little bit of a fuzzy tail sticking out. He'd burrowed up against the back wall behind and on top of a box, almost covered by a bag. As I reached down to pull him out, I swear I could hear him say, "Aw Mom... You ruin all my fun."

Don't worry. He's happily stretched out on the window sill right now, enjoying the cold night air... and plotting his next escapade.

For now... it's off to bed. G'Night!

Changes...

...and not just on the blog (do you like it, though? It's still under construction a bit, but it's coming together! Let me know if the colors don't work or anything - it's FULLY customizable. That's even my picture from a trip to Seaside, OR, in the header!).

I should SO be going to bed right now, but I just wanted to share that I'm looking forward to the next few months. It looks like I'm going to be more involved with Relay for Life this year - possibly on a committee or subcommittee. We'll see what I end up doing... went to the meeting tonight and am not sure how much to commit. I'll figure it out soon.

I'm also hoping to be getting more involved in church. I don't know exactly what THAT will look like either, but I know that God's got things coming down the road for me... and I want on board.

Does anyone read this thing anymore? (Matt - you don't count because I'm your page o' links, lol.)

Blog for Serry

Check out Serry's blog on the right... I'll have updates there on what's going on in her (and therefore OUR) life.

Thanks all.

Fall is here... rainy rainy rainy. It's nice, though... I like the rain.

MO for prayer

I found something on Outlook 2007 I HATE yesterday... I schedule interpreters for our office and that means that I use Outlook to track everything. I have my own scheduling calendar, but I put the info in all of our Deaf staff's calendars, including changing the category to an Interpreter(s) Scheduled category. All is fine and good until I come to a series - you now can't change the category of an individual appointment in a series... it's all or nothing, baby. Any tech geeks out there know the way around this? (And no, I can't break up the series'--they aren't my appointments!) I just want them to be YELLOW!

All for now...

The Flowers Were Bothering Me

OK, so the background was bothering me. I'm going to continue to play until I get it right. this isn't right, but it's closer to what I want.

Do you know how difficult it is to find a background that works for a blog? Yeah.

New Layout

I know, You can't quite read it... I'm working on it. but i've spent too much time here already. ;)

Blogging

I'm going to blog more, folks. just an FYI. I'm goign to try to use this as a conduit for what God talks to me about. Try is the key word, but I think it'll work.

Love you guys!

halfway through folks...

I, like Jenni, suck at this blog thing.

Hopefully I'll get better at it, I'm just feeling like I don't have much to say. Here's the basics.

2007 is good so far. Started line dancing, picked up my guitar, will be using it for worship soon. it's all good stuff. on the other hand, my little kitty is sick. She's 16, so an old one, but she's my sweetheart, my little girl - I've had her since I was 12. I don't know what all is wrong (we've done a bunch of tests, but... a lot is inconclusive, other than "she's old"), but she's dropped from 8 lbs to 4.5 lbs. tonight, though, she's bright and chipper as ever - it's hard to think that she's sick. pray for her if you think about it... she's one of my best friends.

Idol started last night. It was funny :) Tonight is SEATTLE!

OK - time to go - NIGHT!

Construction

Pardon the construction around here... I've switched to the new format and, though blogger likes to say that their drag and drop thing is good, it's not the same as what I had before - and since I am comfortable with HTML - I've got to play with things a bit. ;)

oh, and I'll try to post more this winter. :)
